Books, Blocks and Balls is a fun, interactive event that helps parents and children learn, with activities centered around child development. It also provides information and developmental screenings.
And best of all: It's FREE!
Books, Blocks and Balls includes:
- activity stations with books, which encourages literacy;
- blocks, which encourage math and fine motor skills; and
- balls, which help with gross and fine motor skills, as well as problem-solving skills.
While children "play" at Books, Blocks and Balls, they're actually learning. And kids learn better when families come together to support their child’s development before kindergarten.
Building blocks for learning: playtime and YOU
You may not think of yourself of a teacher, but you absolutely are!
Your children are watching and copying everything you do, making parents a child’s BEST teacher and No. 1 expert. Our events have staff and trained volunteers to share activities and ideas that focus on developmental milestones, but it's YOU, the parent, who will help your child master skills through playing.
Books, Blocks and Balls is a Help Me Grow initiative that can be done at home with everyday items and toys. The event focuses on child-led play, and families are encouraged to let their child lead the session, whether they're staying in one place the whole time, or if the child is bouncing back and forth from one activity to another.
Developmental screenings shows you the skills your child already has, and which ones are still a work in progress. That way, you learn to watch how your child learns more closely, and you can advocate more effectively for them.
This event is supported through a partnership with United Way of the Coastal Bend's Success By 6, West Oso ISD, ECI Project Niños, and Texas A&M University's College of Education & Human Development.
