CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – Growing up has challenges. Access to personal hygiene products shouldn’t be one.
That’s why Women United, a volunteer group through United Way of the Coastal Bend, collected deodorants for more than 1,000 local youth. The campaign's motto: Together, we can #StopTheStink.
“We all know how brutally hot South Texas summers can be and this was a fun way for us to help kids feel more comfortable,” said Christy Tupaj, the nonprofit's Vice President of Resource Development. “Many Women United members led donation drives at their offices along with spreading the word on social media."
The group collected a combination of in-kind and monetary donations that supplied 1,175 deodorants to area children.
Members distributed deodorants to eight local nonprofits with summer youth programs:
• Aransas Pass for Youth
• Boys & Girls Club of Alice
• Boys & Girls Club of Beeville
• Boys & Girls Clubs of Coastal Bend
• Boys & Girls Club of Kingsville
• Neighborhood Centers of Corpus Christi
• Youth Odyssey
• YWCA Corpus Christi
WHY THIS MATTERS: "Summers in South Texas are expensive for struggling families," said Stephanie Jordan, President and CEO of United Way of the Coastal Bend. "This new program was Women United's way to help those families have one less expense."
